Some of this along with some of that

By Aaron Schultz

Banquets next week, no practice Friday, and the run of the Lester Prairie Bulldogs boys’ basketball team to the state tournament have all contributed to a very lopsided sports section this week.

One of my main jobs as the sports editor for the Herald Journal is to try to balance, as fairly as I can, the coverage of the three local schools.

Those schools are, of course, Lester Prairie, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, and Holy Trinity of Winsted.

It is a part of my job I take very seriously, and to the best of my ability, try to do well.

But, then there are weeks like this week that drive me crazy, and there just isn’t much I can do about it.

So, as you look through the sports and are looking for a ton of Lakers’ or Trojans’ sports news, you are going to be out of luck.

See, at the beginning of each week I take a look ahead and get a rough outline of what I will be covering, and what will be in the upcoming paper.

This past week, I was looking at getting a couple of photos of softball practice from the Trojans and Lakers, as well as the girls’ basketball round-ups.

Sure, I was set. The Bulldogs will, obviously, be getting the majority of coverage in the paper this week due to their run for the state boys’ basketball tournament.
Then, slowly, my plan began to fall apart.

The Lakers’ wrestling and girls’ basketball teams, along with the boys’ basketball team have their banquets set for this week.

So, what does that mean? To me, it means I am going to need to wait another week to do round-ups so that all the award winners can be announced at the banquets instead of in the paper.

Makes perfect sense to me, and it is how it should be, but it takes a number of items I had planned on for the paper out of the mix.

Well, how about spring previews of the upcoming season?

Nope, way too early for that. As a spring head coach myself, I know there is no way to do a proper preview this early.

Most of the teams only have a handful of practices in, and baseball doesn’t even start until today (Monday).

Surely there has to be some sports’ news going on somewhere in the HLWW school, or even some scuttle bug.

I talked to athletic director Dale Decker and asked if there was anything out there I could do for the paper.

He gave me a cool story idea, but one that won’t be ready until next week.

See, with the new section assignments out, Decker and the rest of the section ADs will be meeting to separate the section into two districts, which should be some neat information.

However, that meeting isn’t until this week, so that story idea has to wait.

Then, I talked to a fellow employee at the paper, and asked if she had heard of any sports scuttle going around, and all she could come up with was the NCAA brackets the kids were playing.

I am playing in a couple of those brackets as well, but that isn’t really the type of story idea I was looking for.

Hindsight is always 20/20, and I definitely should have prepared better to have some Laker news, but sometimes, there just isn’t much going on.

Pretty much the same can be said for the Trojans.

While I did get a photo from softball practice, the round-ups were also put on hold for the Trojans.

I have the information for girls’ basketball, but I wasn’t sure if the kids that received all-conference awards were informed yet.

So, instead of running a few round-ups and not others, I decided to hold both the boys’ and girls’ basketball round-ups so that I could run a group of them all at once, instead of sporadically.

As I am writing this, I am guessing that something will end up coming up this week, and I’ll be running round-ups sporadically anyway.

Oh well, I’m going to give it a shot, and hope it works out.

I did take a look back to what I did back in March of 2002 when the Lakers boys’ basketball team qualified for state.

That issue of the paper was pretty much dominated by HLWW boys’ basketball information, and there was little else.

Not to make excuses; oh wait, yes I am, but that is just how the ball bounces from time-to-time.

Anyways, I just thought I’d offer up this explanation/excuse for why this week’s paper is heavy on Lester Prairie news.

Bracket blowout

Yes, this year, like every other year, I am participating in several NCAA basketball bracket pools.

And yes, like pretty much every other year, I am sure to do poorly.

Although this year, I have taken a slightly different approach to my bracket picking.

In years’ past, I usually did a couple of brackets, and, for the most part, picked the same teams throughout in all the brackets.

This year, I filled out four, the most I have done in a long time, and I believe I have picked a different final four in each of them.

Will this work for me? Probably not, but what the heck, I might as well give it a shot.

The two teams that I have winning it are Ohio State and Texas.

Vikings, do something

As every day goes by, I am getting more and more frustrated with the Minnesota Vikings.

Seriously, their big signing has been receiver Boddy Wade. Never heard of him?

Me either.

And I pay very close attention to the NFL with fantasy football, and all, and I still don’t recognize him.

I have a funny feeling this is going to be a very long year for us purple fans.
