It’s that time of the summer when people head out to nearby Howard Lake for the Wright County Fair which runs this year from Wednesday, July 25 through Sunday, July 29.

New this year to the fair is the Combine Demo Derby happening opening night at 7 p.m. in the grandstand arena.

“We wanted to try something different,” said Dennis Beise, a 36-year Wright County Fair board member.

This may be new to the Wright County Fair, but other cities and celebrations have successfully sponsored the derby, so the board decided to give it a try this year, according to Beise.

Also taking place opening night is the 2007 Fairest of the Fair coronation in which nine young women from around the county will compete for the crown.

Watch as outgoing royalty Courtney Heuer, Hope Braatz, and Kirie Marshall hand off their crowns to the new fair ambassadors beginning at 7 p.m. on the free stage near the fair gates.

Other events that attract approximately 45,000 people annually are the 4-H animals and exhibits, Midway rides, traditional fair food, free entertainment, grandstand musical acts, and more.

The Circle Back Band can be heard in the entertainment tent Wednesday and Thursday from 7:30 p.m. to midnight playing country, and ‘70s and ‘80s music, Silverabo will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday in the same tent.

The country band Wagon Wheelers will perform from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday on the free stage, and that evening will feature the Blind Pigs from 8 p.m. to midnight in the entertainment tent. The Castaways will appear on the free stage Sunday from 2:30 to 5 p.m.

Other fair events taking place include the lumberjack competition, Franko the hypnotist and magician, the exotic animal petting zoo, and the car-crashing demolition derby.

The demo derby, in the Grandstand Arena, will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 each day.

The fair runs from Wednesday through Sunday, July 25 through July 29 at the Wright County Fair grounds in Howard Lake.
