Organization gives families Another Chance
One grass roots organization that’s making a difference
By Lindsay Scherer
When Emily Jackson of Mayer, and her mother, Cindy Anderson of Milaca, were discussing how to help a teen girl in December 2006, they had no idea that an entire organization would come out of their conversation.
Another Chance is a non-profit organization out of Mayer that takes new or used infant, child, and maternity items and gets them to where they are truly needed.
Jackson and Anderson first came up with the idea when they were talking about a teen girl they knew who was pregnant.
Jackson, who is a mother of four, had a lot of baby clothes and toys that were no longer being used. She decided to give them to the girl.
Anderson is a seamstress by trade and fixed up anything that needed a little repair.
The two then decided that with some donations, they could help even more families in need.
Some examples of the donations that Another Chance accepts are cribs, highchairs, strollers, changing tables, bassinets, blankets, toys, bibs, clothing, and shoes.
According to Jackson, the donations, themselves, do not need to be in perfect condition. As long as they’re usable, Another Chance will wash and repair the items as needed.
Any money that is raised is used to purchase diapers, wipes, and other disposable toiletries for the families.
Jackson stressed that all donations are used to help their clients directly. “We won’t even use donation money to buy detergent to wash the donations. We pay for that out of our own pockets.”
They accept donations year-round. Any donations can be dropped off at Pizza Ranch locations in Waconia, Delano, and Norwood.
Another Chance works with New Beginnings in Chaska and Carver County to maximize the number of people they can help.
Jackson estimates that approximately 30 girls have been helped through their organization.
