Giving back to the Delano community is what the Delano Area Foundation is all about.

This year, as president of the foundation, Lloyd Griep has volunteered to match donations to the foundation of up to $12,500. A lifelong member of Delano, he lives on the farm where he was born and raised.

“I’ve been in Delano all my life. I’ve made a living here and this is something I can do to give back to the community,” Griep said.

Last January, he began talking to Delano resident John Soberg about the foundation, and its struggle to raise needed funds. Soberg, who had extensive experience in fundraising, said he’d be willing to work with him and the foundation.

Unfortunately, Soberg was diagnosed with cancer last May and passed away this month.

“When he passed away, I made the commitment to put $12,500 into the foundation on the basis of a match,” said Griep.

The donations can be in increments of any dollar amount and, because the Delano Area Foundation is a 501c3 corporation, everything is tax deductible. Griep will match donations up to $12,500, and the Minnesota Foundation will then match up to $25,000 through Bremer Banks.

That means $50,000 could be put into the Delano Area Foundation. The organization has until Dec. 31, to raise these much needed funds.

Griep and the late Don Hamilton originally created the Delano Area Foundation, which began in 1997, with area farmers in mind.

“They live poor, and when they sell their farm, they have money, but have to pay a lot of taxes on it,” Griep explained.

If those farmers give a portion of their land to the foundation, it can then be sold, by the foundation, without tax consequences to the farmer and they can get an annuity for themselves.

Griep said the area farmers actually end up with more spending money than if they had sold the farm, kept the money, and lived off the interest.

Along with helping area farmers, the foundation gives residents and local business owners a way to give back to the community where they live and work.

Back to the community is exactly where the foundations funds go. Having given to Dollars for Scholars, Love INC - Heartland, the Delano Area Educational Foundation, the Delano-Franklin Area Historical Society, to name a few, Greip said they have many goals.

Hoping to continue giving to area organizations, the foundation plans to also enhance arts and the park system in Delano.

“We have to go into the cities for so many things we don’t have in Delano because we don’t have the money,” Griep said. “This will hopefully give us the money to do it.

“We need more arts, like community theater. Buffalo and Waconia have it and we should, too.”
