Plans move forward for ice arena
The next step is a letter of intent to the Dassel-Cokato School Board
By Kristen Miller
Plans are moving forward with a potential site for the Dassel-Cokato Ice and Sports Center located on school district property.
The proposed plan would be for the ice arena center to lease land owned by the Dassel-Cokato School District for the center to built on, according to continuing talks during special board subcommittee meetings.
Before the proposal can be brought to the school board for a decision to go forward, a survey of the land must be done and a letter of intent developed.
Rob Swendra of the ice arena center met with the special school board subcommittee May 24 after the regular school board meeting. The subcommittee working with the ice arena committee about the potential ice and sports center consists of board members Cary Linder, Kevin Dahlman, Richard Tormanen, and Brian Danielson.
After a letter of intent is given by the DCISC, the board subcommittee will work on the conditions and wordage of a lease agreement only if the school board approves the two committees to move forward with plans.
The district would only be providing the land with the district being the landlord.
The proposed ice arena would be self-sufficient and would not financially burden the district, according to Swendra.
The potential area would benefit the district in several ways including providing additional space for physical education classes, on-campus ice hockey rink to eliminate costs pertaining to travel and use of the Litchfield rink, ability to host home hockey games, as well as potential space for the alternative learning center and other school-related programs.
