Boy hurt while riding his bicycle alone near Shoreline Drive

A Howard Lake boy was injured following a bicycle accident last week near his home along Shoreline Drive.
Darrin Blanchette Jr., 14, was riding alone last Monday at about 9 p.m. when he was injured along the side of the road, said Howard Lake Police Chief Dan Lang.
The family started looking for him after he didn’t answer his cell phone, Lang said.
He managed to call his family back and report that he was hurt, he said.
Authorities are calling this a freak accident, with Blanchette possibly hitting a tree, Lang said. The boy doesn’t remember the accident.
“We don’t have anything to substantiate something else,” Lang said. There are no other leads.
The bicycle, itself, had no obvious damage that might suggest a car accident or other injury there are no dents or damage to the frame, he said.
The road is a dead-end street, although it is well traveled, he said.
The boy was found near the treeline of his house, Lang added.
Blanchette was taken to Buffalo Hospital, and then airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center.
From there, he was taken to the pediatric unit at North Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in fair condition.
Blanchette is an eighth grader at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted.
