Lester Prairie School Principal Pam Lukens seemed very pleased this week when she acknowledged the progress the school has made on collecting funds for its elementary school playground equipment.

The grand total to date, including matching funds, is $35,848.

The goal of $45,000 will allow the school to purchase playground equipment and make improvements to the main playground area and the kindergarten and preschool playground.

The new playground systems will accommodate more students and be more age-appropriate. There will also be updates that will include resurfacing the basketball court, new basketball hoops, soft surface under new and old equipment, footings, and cement work.

The preschool and kindergarten play area is to include a sandbox and hard surface area.

The most recent donations to the playground came from the Lions Club breakfast March 25, which had more than 300 people attend to support the fundraiser.

A cookie dough fundraiser brought in $9,025. A contribution of $500, given to Lukens last Monday by Scoutmaster Will Ahlbrecht on behalf of the Lester Prairie Boy Scouts, was also included in the grand total.

The next fundraiser will be a dance Friday, April 13, in the Lester Prairie gym. The dance will be from 7 to 9 p.m. for students in grades fourth through eighth grade. Students will be charged $3 for entrance and snacks will be provided.

All the proceeds will go to the playground fundraiser.
