Boxes to Iraq need postage

Donations are still coming for soldiers in Iraq, but $ for postage is tight

Donations are not hard to come by for one local group sending boxes to soldiers in Iraq, it’s the money for postage that’s running out.

The project started after the news that duties in Iraq were being extended. Janet Werner of Darwin suggested the Gethsemane Lutheran Church of Dassel do something for the soldiers.

The WELCA women of Gethsemane including Ann Bollman and other members donated items including baked goods for the soldiers.

Gerry and Ann Bollman have already sent out 82 boxes of goodies to soldiers in Iraq since the project began last March.

Recently nine boxes were sent out and the cost of postage came to $97.

The average cost of postage per box is $12 depending on the weight of the package.

The Bollmans collect donations from church and send the items as they come in. Some donations have included baked goods, food, and other items like puzzle books and triple A batteries.

“We know they get [the packages],” said Gerry Bollman.

Earlier last month, he spoke with Tony Schmiesing, one of the Dassel soldiers receiving care packages who was home on leave from Iraq.
