A dean of students has been hired for the Dassel-Cokato Middle School and will officially begin mid-August.

Brian Franklin was approved as the new dean of students at Friday’s school board meeting.

Franklin taught sixth grade for the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District for 15 years and is excited to be working in more of a disciplinary role at DC.

“It’s a great opportunity for me. I’m excited to work with the staff and students at DC,” Franklin said.

His wife, Rachel, is in her second year at DC, teaching first grade at Cokato Elementary as well as being head coach for the girls’ softball team.

Gary Johnson, middle school principal, did an extensive search, and feels they came up with the right person, he said.

“He has a good understanding of kids and a good sense of discipline,” Johnson said.

Franklin worked in law enforcement and has been in various situations.

“I think my experience will benefit my role at DC,” Franklin said.

He believes in teaching kids respect and honesty and helping them make better choices.

Franklin’s philosophy reflects “stopping it before it starts” and being proactive when it comes to discipline.
