The new Dassel branch of Farmers State Bank of Darwin served its first customer, Audrey Pearson, last Monday.

“I always felt at home at the bank,” she said, as the bank staff lined up by the door of the new 3,600-square-foot facility and applauded Pearson’s entrance.

Pearson, a former Dassel and Darwin school teacher, has been a customer of Farmers State Bank for the past 48 years. She was Mark Johnson’s fourth grade teacher. He is the president of the bank, and escorted her inside the new bank branch next to Highway 12.

The new branch isn’t as large at the original bank site in Darwin, but it has more functional bank space, Johnson said. The branch is built around a tall, stacked Virginia ledge-stone fireplace.

The original bank at 318 N. 1st St., Darwin, has more storage space, he said.

Last week, the new bank branch in Dassel was open to the public until 4 p.m. This week, the bank’s extended hours begin, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

In addition to Mark Johnson, the branch will be staffed by Max Johnson and Ben Beckman, co-branch managers; Josh Johnson, vice president; and tellers Shanna Kurtz, Kelly Smith, Bridget Forsberg and Jill Jackson.
