Join the ‘Fairest Days of Summer’ at the Meeker County Fair

It’s that time of summer for fair food and fun at the 136th annual Meeker County Fair Thursday, July 31 through Sunday, Aug. 3.

New to the fair this year is a combine derby beginning at 7 p.m. Friday in the grandstand.

Also new this year is music from local country artist Greg Michaels Thursday from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in the bandshell.

There are also some exciting and new activities being offered this year for children to participate in, including Rock ‘n Recess in the bandshell for kids pre-kindergarten through seventh grade with entertainers teaching some fun dances Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Another activity new to the Meeker County Fair this year is the Born to Read program Saturday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in three areas of the grounds. Each participant will receive a free book.

A Scholastic book fair will also be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a variety of books and items from Scholastic for sale for kids up to eighth grade.

For kids to have fun with different activities and crafts there is Fun in the Sun for Kids beginning with a craft event Friday at 6:30 p.m. by the fair office, activities Saturday, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the bandshell; and another craft event Sunday at 4 p.m. by the fair office.

For those ready for a roaring good time, the demolition derbies are Thursday at 7 p.m., and Saturday at 7 p.m., and the autocross is Sunday at 2 p.m. all in the grandstand.

For those in the mood for swing dancing, there will be the band, Route 55, which is a 16-piece big band playing swing and big band era music in the bandshell Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Backroads will be playing Saturday from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. in the beer garden.

The carnival, including rides and games, opens Thursday at 4 p.m., Friday at 1 p.m., and noon on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday at 10:30 a.m., kids ages 4 to 11 can participate in the pedal pull in front of the fine arts building.

There will be three performances of the Sherwin Linton Show Sunday, 1 to 1:45 p.m., 3 p.m., and again from 7 to 9 p.m. in the bandshell.

There will also be a talent show Sunday at 2 p.m., and trolley rides will also be available from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday, given by Ed and Rose Borman.
