The week has finally arrived when students, staff, and community members will be moving classroom contents from the old Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School to the new one.

The excitement begins Tuesday, Feb. 12 when the high school students will be bussed to the new school during the day to transfer their locker belongings into their new lockers.

Each grade will be bussed out to the location, one at a time, and will be given an hour to spend in the new school.

Then, the official big move begins Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 a.m. and is expected to take two half-days, according to HLWW High School Principal Mike Day

HLWW does not have school Wednesday, Feb. 13 through Monday, Feb. 18. The first official day of classes at the new high school will be Tuesday, Feb. 19.

The school has a semi, a truck lift/trailer, and many other trucks and trailers lined up, but could use more, and “anything that’s covered,” Day said.

“We’ll take as much help, and as many hands as possible,” Day added.

Volunteers just need to show up at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 13 at the front, east side of the old high school and everyone will load up as many vehicles as possible. Half of the volunteers will stay at the old high school to help load, and half will go to the new high school to unload.

“We’re hoping to just spend half a day Wednesday, which will get the biggest majority done, and tentatively spend another half-day Thursday, but we don’t know if we’ll even need that,” Day explained.

If there’s more to move Thursday, volunteers should be at the old high school at 7:30 a.m. and should expect to only help out for half the day, or any amount of time a person can give.

Slight bussing changes to incorporate new school
As of Tuesday, Feb. 19, any student that currently walks to the high school in Howard Lake will need to ride a bus to the new high school, and they will need to be at the middle school between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. to board a bus going to the new site.

The school is sending out post-cards to all students riding a bus. This postcard is to notify all students and parents that the school is making a few subtle changes in its routes that may change pick-up and drop-off times.

The morning changes may affect pick-up times for the elementary schools by about 5 minutes, and the early drop offs in Winsted may be changed by 3 to 5 minutes. The bus that the students get onto in the afternoon at Winsted may also change.

The school district expects a smooth transition and no major time changes. Please allow for time flexibility as these changes are implemented into the routing system.
