A power pole on fire early Thursday morning knocked out power to the area and also delayed Delano Schools by two hours.

The outage took place just after 5 a.m. when a fire started on an Xcel Energy pole near the intersection of Ebersole Avenue and 65th Street SE.

Affecting Delano, Rockford, Montrose, Waverly, and Howard Lake, power was restored to most of the affected area by 6:26 a.m., according to Delano Municipal Utilities.

As late as 7:45 a.m., parts of Rockford, Montrose, Waverly, and Howard Lake were still without power.

The system was unable to auto-switch to the backup transmission lines due to construction on the Highway 12 transmission system. Because of this, crews at Delano Municipal Utilities were in the process of bringing generators online when Xcel Energy notified DMU that power had been restored.

The outage affected about 3,700 customers, commented Patti Nystuen of Xcel Energy. Crews repaired the burnt pole later in the morning. The cause of the pole fire is unknown.

The Delano Fire Department responded to the pole fire.
