Times are tough, and it seems that every day I hear about another job loss or company closing.

Incidentally, since news about a private company is private data, the newspaper doesn’t have access to those records, in order to confirm something like a plant closing. Rumors and gossip take hold.

Such is the way things stand now. It is my opinion that if you allow the public to know the simple facts of any subject, you’re better off than keeping things secret. Small-town gossip always makes thing worse than the true state of affairs.

Nevertheless, I came by an excellent verse that seems to sum up a good anecdote for gossip: “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in hardship, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of fellow Christians, practicing hospitality.” Romans 12:10-13.

Perseverance in hardship. That’s what gets you through the rough times. Remember that “slow and steady wins the race” when it comes to the hazards of life.

Mind you, we’re supposed to be CHEERFUL about this, too. Remember the apostle Paul used to sing while in prison! In prison! So, let’s try to keep our perspective (as I’m telling myself this, too).

Keeping it local

As a side note on the economic times, I would like to harp (I mean mention) once again on the importance of buying local and spending money locally.

Please patronize your local shops. It’s important to keep the little guys in business.

For example, you should consider buying groceries at the local grocer, or buy coffee at your local coffee shop.

Quote of the week

“For by the grace given me (the apostle Paul), I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.” Romans 12:3.
