God will sustain you

This is the time of the year when many of us become bogged down.

With the cold and flu season at its height, we worry if we will get through it all okay. After a long, cold winter, we may wonder if spring will ever come.

With anxiety about the economy and unemployment, we may fear for our future well-being. With tears of sadness and grief, with feelings of loneliness and the pain of past hurts, we wonder if somehow, we will be able to carry on through it all.

It is at times like this in our lives that our Lord God comes to us and assures us that He will be with us and will carry us through whatever troubles, fears, or pains we experience. Consider the words of the Lord as recorded in Isaiah 46:4: “Even to your old age and gray hairs, I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”

God originally spoke these words to His chosen people – the descendants of Jacob. The people would be facing a time of hardship and captivity as they were carried into exile to the land of Babylon. In the midst of their fears and troubles, God assured His people that He, their Creator, would carry them when they were too weak to walk by themselves. God assured His people that He would not forget about them, but that He would rescue them once again.

This is true for us today, as well. Whatever your challenges may be in this life, be assured that the Lord God will sustain you.

If you are discouraged with the winter blues, if you are troubled by the pain of the economy, the realities of unemployment and insecure times, be assured that God will carry you through it.

If you are troubled by the limits age has placed upon you, be assured that God will sustain you “even to your old age and gray hairs.” If you feel lonely, or great emotional pain, be assured that you are not alone, God is with you. If you feel ill, or face an illness you fear you may not overcome, be assured that the God who has created you “will sustain you.”

In fact, God has already rescued us from our biggest trouble of life – our lost, sinful condition. When we were lost in sin and unable to save ourselves, the Lord God sent His Son, Jesus Christ into this world.

Where we failed, Jesus lived a perfect life. When we were fearful of the troubles of this world, Jesus suffered the wrath of God for all of our sin and troubles upon the cross for us. Where we feared defeat, Jesus rose from the dead and won for us the victory of life eternal.

Jesus has rescued us from our fears, from our sin, and even from hell itself. In its place, Jesus has won for us the victory of life eternal in heavenly paradise.

One day, God will fully fulfill the promise spoken through Isaiah, “I will rescue you,” when He will receive us into heavenly glory. He will fulfill that promise for every person who trusts in Jesus Christ for their life and salvation. Heaven will be a place where the fears, worries, and troubles of this world will no longer be present – only eternal glory and bliss in the presence of God.

What troubles and fears do you face in this life? What has you down in the dumps right now? What fears or discouragements, past hurts or present limitations are you facing? Take them to the Lord God, for he has promised through his prophet Isaiah, “. . . I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”
