Schultz is NFL pick-a-winner regular season champion

January 5, 2009

by Stephen Wiblemo

The regular season of the NFL has come to a close, and the playoffs are underway.

The same is true for the first edition of the Herald Journal Publishing NFL pick-a-winner contest.

The week 17 pickers finished the season strong, led by Enterprise Dispatch guest Luke Karlgaard with a 12-4 record.

Delano Herald Journal sports editor Matt Kane, Herald Journal sports editor Aaron Schultz, HJ guest Dale Kovar, and myself all scored 10-6 records.

DHJ guest Bradey Lemmerman scored a 7-9.

With these final scores, the regular season has ended and after 16 weeks of picks, Aaron Schultz is the first-ever HJP NFL pick-a-winner champion.

There are 256 regular-season games scheduled in 17 weeks.

Because the NFL pick-a-winner contest got started on the second week of the regular season, all six contestants were spotted a 16-game start for week 1. Also, there was one tie game this season, week 11, when the Eagles and Bengals ended the game tied at 13. That game was thrown out of the official pick-a-winner scoring.

With those two factors considered, Schultz claimed the title with an overall record of 167-88.

Coming in second was the ED guest pickers with a record of 164-91.

I was close behind in third with a 163-92 record.

The DHJ guest pickers finished fourth with a 159-96 record, the HJ guest pickers were fifth with a 157-98 record, and Matt Kane finished as the first official cellar-dweller with a 155-100 record.

Although Schultz is the regular-season champion, there are other season awards to hand out.

Based on win percentage, my splendid 13-2 record in week 11 was the best single-week record of any picker, at 86 percent.

On the other side, Kane’s astonishing 5-9 record in week 5 was the lowest single-week record of any picker, at 35 percent.

Using this same scale of win percentage, the individual guest pickers from each HJ publication are listed below, and the champion scores are in.

The ED guest picker champion, with a record of 13-3, and a win percentage of 81 percent, is Dassel-Cokato wrestling coach Bryan Clemen.

The HJ guest picker champion is Winsted Wildcat player and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted junior varsity baseball coach Cullen Schultz with an 11-3 record and 78 win percentage.

The DHJ guest picker champion, with a record of 12-2, and the highest win percentage of any guest picker at 85 percent, is Delano High School athletic director Josef Haas.

These three champions will now move on to the NFL pick-a-winner playoffs. Aaron Schultz, Kane, and I will join them, and we will compete to see who will become the first NFL pick-a-winner playoff grand champion.

The format for the NFL pick-a-winner playoffs is different than it is during the regular season.

The playoff format is a simple bracket, similar to those used during the college basketball tournament.

Each competitor filled out a complete bracket before the NFL playoffs started. A correct answer is worth a certain number of points, depending on which round it is in.

First-round picks are worth one point, second-round picks are worth two points, third-round picks are worth four points, and the Super Bowl is worth eight points.

Thanks to all of our guest pickers this season. We hope you enjoyed our game, and we look forward to next season.
