WAVERLY, MN – The annual fall festival for St. Mary’s Church in Waverly is set for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13. The church is also celebrating its 125th anniversary.

The festival will feature authentic Mexican dancing and food, the HLWW Drama Club, and demonstrations by Northwest Martial Arts.

The event begins Saturday, Sept. 12, with a golf tournament Saturday, 1 p.m. at ShadowBrooke Golf Course. Anyone interested may call Dan Schaible at (612) 708-7617

Mass will be 4 p.m. at the church. Following Mass, the family fiesta begins at 5:15 p.m. with fun for the whole family down at the park by Waverly Lake.

Genuine Mexican food will be served, and there will be free piñatas for the young ones to try to break. Free ice cream will be served, while supplies last.

For adults, margaritas will be served from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, and the beer tent will be open both days.

A variety of creative, themed baskets will be set up for bidding. Each of these baskets is made up of a variety of items, and each one has a different theme. Bids will be accepted on them until 8 p.m. Saturday; with last bids for Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Sunday features several events, including a pork chop dinner, as well as an Old Country Bazaar. Doors open at 9 a.m.

A produce booth with fresh produce and a plant sale can both be found at the bazaar.

A cake walk will provide a chance to win a cake to take home and enjoy, but if you don’t win one there, the bake sale will have plenty of treats to purchase.

For fun and games, there will be bingo for everyone who wants to play, and other special games for the kids and teenagers.

A silent auction will give everyone an opportunity to bid on many different items, with bids closing at different times throughout the day.

There will also be a co-ed softball tournament Sunday, beginning at noon. “We encourage family and neighbors to create a team,” commented Mary Pettit. Call Mary to form a team at (763) 658-4319, ext. 21.

A book sale and coffee will offer a way to relax and soak in the atmosphere.

The Knights of Columbus and St. Mary’s Family Circles will put on a pork chop dinner at 11 a.m. at the Fellowship Hall. Cost is $8 for one chop, and $9 for two. Carryout is available for this dinner.

This year, there will be a “Wagon of Wine” raffle as well.

Also, the St. Mary’s youth team will be selling T-shirts, mugs, and other items highlighting the church’s 125th anniversary.

This year features more youth activities, including Plinko, like what is seen on the Price is Right game show. “We’re focusing a lot of attention on kids this year,” Pettit said. Plinko will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday

Raffle winners will be announced 4 p.m. Sunday. As usual, the festival closes with the big drawing for the car raffle which will be at 4:30 p.m. A new 2009 Chevy Malibu, with a cash $15,000 option, will be raffled off as the grand prize. Only 400 tickets will be sold. Tickets can be bought up until the festival for $100 by contacting the parish office.
