WINSTED, HOWARD LAKE, MN – A Howard Lake man was charged with passing counterfeit bills when he allegedly attempted to pass a fake $50 bill at Casey’s General Store in Winsted, Jan. 27.
Jose Alfredo Varela, 21, of Howard Lake was arrested by the Howard Lake Police Department on that same day for possession of counterfeit money.
When the Howard Lake Police Department stopped Varela’s vehicle, additional counterfeit $50 bills were located.
Law enforcement officers discovered additional counterfeit $50 bills at Security State Bank in Howard Lake, according to Howard Lake Police Officer Darek Szczepanik.
Varela was booked into the McLeod County Jail and charged with a gross misdemeanor of possession of counterfeit money. Charges may be pending in Wright County as well.
