DASSEL, MN - After five years, Dassel has its very own bake shop once again with the opening of Jay’z Bakery Saturday.
Owners Jason and Mona Zimmerman of Dassel opened the doors Nov. 21 to Jay’z Bakery, located at 361 Atlantic Avenue in Dassel.
The couple purchased the old bakery building four years ago and have been in the process of getting it ready to reopen, including a complete remodel of the building.
When the couple sold their Cottage Grove home two years ago, they moved to Dassel to more actively pursue Jason’s dream of opening his own bakery.
Together, the couple has 38 years experience in the bakery profession including at SuperMoms, Inc. based in St. Paul Park, where the couple met.
Opening the bakery was a way for Jason to be his own boss and do away with the frustrations of working for the corporate world, he said. Jason has also been working full time for Rainbow Foods.
Though the couple has decided to start out slow, the menu will include a variety of breads, buns, donuts, bagels, cookies, pies, cupcakes and, eventually, wedding cakes.
The recipes are a mixture of Jason’s own recipes along with recipes from former Dassel bakery owner, Dave Backes.
“Dave’s been very supportive,” Jason said.
There will also be some special tasty treats just for the holidays including peanut brittle, cashew crunch, divinity, and more.
The store will be open seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“We can’t wait to let the town taste what we have to offer,” Jason said.
“I think they are ready for fresh bakery around here,” he added.
