Saturday event to feature ribbon cutting, live music

DELANO, MN – The end of the final phase of Highway 12 road construction is upon us, and a large community celebration is planned for Saturday night.

This spring, it was a “How The West Was One” celebration that took place at the Delano American Legion.

Now, for Saturday’s event, members of the Delano Area Chamber of Commerce Highway 12 Task Force have planned a community-wide free “When The West Was Done” celebration, complete with food specials, live music, and more to commemorate the completion of the final phase of Highway 12 road construction in Delano.

At Tuesday morning’s task force meeting at Star West, task force members finalized plans for the event, which will include a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony in the area of the Delano American Legion/Absolute Automotive, then proceed across the bridge into downtown Delano on Bridge Avenue.

In that area, a tent and stage will be set up, and Three Crows Café and Coffeehouse, Jukebox, Dave’s Town Club, and the Delano American Legion will all be sponsoring food and beverage specials, according to the chamber.

Attendees over 21 years old can receive a free wristband from those restaurants that will allow them to enjoy alcoholic beverages purchased from the participating restaurants at the street dance. Law enforcement and event volunteers will be monitoring wristbands on the street.

Task force co-chairperson John Tackaberry said this isn’t just a street dance, but rather, a celebration that all roads through Delano are open and that Delano remains open for business.

“It’s a celebration of our community,” added task force co-chairperson Wendy Gilmer last week. “There is an incredible amount of of positive energy from the community and, as hard as it has been, I think we’ve emerged stronger.”

The event will occur rain or shine, and people are encouraged to bring “lawn chairs, blankets, and umbrellas.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Legion area is expected to begin at 6 p.m., then live music and a street dance will follow from 7 to 11 p.m. with country and rock hits from the band, Silverado, which will be playing on Bridge Avenue between Second and River Streets.

Also, before the music gets underway, there will be a 5k run.

Line-up for the run begins at 5 p.m., and the run will start at 5:15 p.m. at the intersection of Bridge Avenue and River Street. Entries will be limited to 150, so register early to ensure you don’t miss this fun event, according to organizer Kristin Nelson.

“Join our community in celebrating the conclusion of construction and reopening of Highway 12 in Delano,” Nelson said. “Local businesses will be serving food and drink outside, and there will be many family-friendly events after the run.”

The Delano Area Chamber of Commerce, the City of Delano, Crow River Bank, State Bank of Delano, and the four downtown dining establishments are sponsoring the event.

The next meeting of the Delano Area Chamber of Commerce Highway 12 Task Force will be Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 8:50 a.m. at the State Bank of Delano’s lower level meeting room.
