INDEPENDENCE, MN – Fire destroyed the greenhouse portion of Winsome Orchids and Gardens in Independence March 21, according to West Hennepin Public Safety (WHPS).

WHPS, along with the Delano Fire Department, were dispatched to the business, located on Hennepin County Road 11, for a report of a structure fire at 7:18 a.m.

“It was learned that the greenhouse section of this business was burning, causing large amounts of black smoke to be visible from several miles in the area,” according to WHPS.

An officer from WHPS arrived and relayed information to Delano Fire Department regarding the size of the structure fire, according to WHPS. Delano Fire then contacted multiple fire departments in the area for assistance, including Loretto, Maple Plain, and Rockford.

Sgt. Gary Kroells of WHPS said the Delano Fire Department and the other area fire departments did an excellent job in extinguishing the fire.

“No firefighters or civilians were hurt as a result of this fire,” he said.

James Bull is the property owner, according to WHPS, and the orchid greenhouse was acquired in October 2003, according to Winsome’s web site. Previously, orchids have been wholesaled from this location by Castle Rock Orchids, according to the web site.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, and the Hennepin County Crime Lab, Hennepin County Fire Investigator Team, and state fire marshall responded to the scene to investigate, according to WHPS.

The estimated loss is unknown at this time, according to WHPS.
