DELANO Walking through the doors of Edie Mae’s Eatery, in Delano Tuesday, one couldn’t help but see red and purple.
Gathered around a large table were 12 women wearing purple outfits and red hats.
The hats varied in sizes, had sparkles, and others were wrapped in ribbon.
“It all began in 2004,” said member Jo Hagen. “Adeline (Erickson) wore a purple suit to Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo, and we came up with the idea. By that Friday, we had 15 of us getting together.”
Since that day in church, these red hat ladies have been meeting the second Tuesday of each month.
The ladies are from Buffalo, Delano, Loretto, Maple Plain, Monticello, and Big Lake.
Their meeting places change and whether they are having lunch, tea or picnics, they are guaranteed to have fun.
According to www.redhatsociety.com, the group began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with humor.
Members believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and they might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together.
Together, they share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life may lead them next.
“It really is just a lot of fun,” said Carol Strassburg. “We do a lot of laughing.”
The fun and laughter is sure to continue for the ladies in the red hats.
