HOWARD LAKE, MN Plans are in the works for the first annual Turkey Tagalong 5K run in Howard Lake, which will take place the morning of Thanksgiving, north of the lake.
Organizer Kelli Burau is coordinating the effort with her husband, coach Chad Burau, and Crystal Long, the wife of Luke Long.
“What a great way to balance the day,” Kelli Burau commented about the event. “A great workout in the morning, followed by great food later in the day. Moving our feet, before we eat!”
Burau said that she got the idea while watching “The Biggest Loser,” on television.
“I really was interested in participating in a Thanksgiving day 5K, but wasn’t able to find one close enough. It wouldn’t be convenient to drive anywhere, and still have time to get ready for Thanksgiving day family festivities,” she said.
“So, while watching “The Biggest Loser,” I thought ‘Let’s get a bunch of friends together and run in the morning. Nothing is more motivating than working out with a group of friends.’”
To this end, she sent out an invite to see how many people would be interested in participating.
The entry fee, so-to-speak, is a T-shirt for $7. “We are working on having the T-shirts made, but need a number of participants before ordering,” she added.
The 5K will begin at 9 a.m. on the north side of Howard Lake on Imhoff Avenue, which is the same route used by the lake run during Good Neighbor Days.
E-mail Kelli Burau the correct shirt size for those who are interested in taking part, firstname.lastname@example.org or call (763) 286-5618.
“The first year will be a test run. In future years, money will be collected and donated to a local charity,” Burau said.
If successful, a registration fee will be collected, and the money will be donated to a local foodshelf for the holiday season in following years.
