A time to give thanks
November 22, 2010
by Pastor Rick Messer, Howard Lake Church of Christ

Gratitude, appreciation, thankfulness. These words are often heard around this time of year.

As citizens of this great nation, we truly have reason to be thankful. I would like to share some of my reasons to be thankful with you.

First, I am thankful to the Lord because He is good. The Bible says in Psalm 107:1 (NIV) “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” That brings so much comfort to me during these uncertain times, and I am thankful that God’s love endures forever.

I am also thankful for the men and women who serve our great nation. They have volunteered during a time of war, knowing they could find themselves, in a short time, in some very hostile places. They do this because they believe in something bigger than themselves.

I am very thankful for them. Perhaps you could join me in saying, “We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers.” 1 Thessalonians 1:2 (NIV) I do not ever want to take their sacrifice for granted and I am thankful for all of those who serve in our armed forces.

I am also thankful for my family and friends. I am truly amazed at how good God is. He has given us a wonderful home, a wonderful church, and has provided us, through the body of Christ, a wonderful family. And I am thankful.

This is why at Thanksgiving, I will, “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” Psalm 100:1–5 (NIV)1

I’m sure that you could add many more things to be thankful for to this list. So, I pray that you will take time this Thanksgiving to reflect upon the reasons you are thankful with your family, and then pause to thank God, who has made it all possible.

Give thanks to the Lord for He is good.
