DELANO, ROCKFORD, MN – Out of five candidates, Delano Mayor Joe McDonald, 43, was endorsed by the Republicans in District 19B last Monday.

The Wright County GOP House District 19B hosted the endorsement process at the Rockford High School Auditorium.

The other candidates included Tracy Vetruba of Howard Lake, McDonald, Ken Felger of Buffalo, Alan Johnson of Waverly, and Jon Papas of St. Michael.

The endorsement took only two rounds of votes, with 88 votes being needed for the endorsement. In the first round, McDonald received 73 votes, Felger 31, Vetruba 24 and Papas and Johnson not receiving enough votes for mention by the event coordinators. Johnson asked delegates to cast his votes behind McDonald.

On the second ballot, McDonald received the necessary 60 percent of the vote to secure the Republican endorsement for the seat soon-to-be-vacated by Tom Emmer, who is running for governor.

This fall, McDonald will run against his DFL opponent, Chris Brazelton.

McDonald and his wife, Rachel, are the parents of three boys: Alex, 18, Jacob, 10, and Aiden, 4. McDonald is currently serving as Mayor of Delano and is owner of McDonald’s Studio.

“It’s always been instilled in my to give back to the community and to serve,” McDonald said at a District 19B Republican debate the week before his endorsement.

McDonald is an active member of the Delano Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, and the Jaycees. He is past president of the Delano Chamber of Commerce and current president of the Delano Economic Development Authority.

In addition, he is on the Delano 4th of July committee, participates in the Sons of the American Legion, and is on the Dell’s Place board of directors, and the Delano Community Education board.

McDonald’s father, KJ, is the Mayor of Watertown. KJ served in the MN House of Representatives for 14 years as a conservative, pro-life Republican.

“He instilled in me those same conservative values, love of God, life, family, our country, and the Constitution,” McDonald noted.

McDonald has been involved in the Republican party for many years, serving as a Delano Precinct Caucus Chairman and State Delegate. He has also volunteered on numerous campaigns.

District 19 includes all of Wright County except for the following: the cities of Howard Lake, Cokato, and Annandale; and townships of French Lake, Middleville, South Haven, Southside, and Stockholm.
