HOWARD LAKE, MN – The four days of Howard Lake’s Good Neighbor Days (GND) celebration provide enough memories to last all year long.

The 33rd annual community get-together begins Thursday, June 24 at 2 p.m., with Queen’s Tea at Good Samaritan Society in Howard Lake, and ends Sunday, June 27 at 6 p.m., with the royalty coronation at the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School auditorium.

Before the festivities, the Howard Lake Good Neighbor Days Committee, along with local churches and the Howard Lake Business Association, will be sponsoring a pre-GND fundraiser through Kids Against Hunger.

More than 100 volunteers are needed to help package meals Wednesday, June 23 from 3 to 7 p.m. at St. James Lutheran School in Howard Lake.

“If people want to work only one hour or the whole shift, that’d be great,” said Bonnie Engel, who is helping to organize the event. “Any time is appreciated.”

The five area churches are involved in the fundraiser include Blessed Hope, First Presbyterian, St. John’s Lutheran, and St. James Lutheran, all of Howard Lake, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly.

To give a donation or sign up to volunteer, contact Engel at (320) 543-2264, or Curt Forst at (320) 543-3736.

Another fundraising opportunity during the celebration is the Run For The Lake 5K, with all proceeds benefiting the Howard Lake Watershed Alliance. The sixth annual event will start at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 27 at the northeast side of Howard Lake by the golf course on Imhoff Avenue, with the finish line at Memorial Park. Entry forms are on the GND website, and also at the Howard Lake Drugstore and Stellar Health Center.

People who attend GND also have the opportunity to reflect on the old days of Howard Lake. Ice cream and fresh strawberries will be served at the Security State Bank foyer Friday, June 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in honor of the Howard Lake Strawberry Festival that took place in the mid-1940s through the early-1950s.
