CARVER COUNTY, MN John Emery, a long-time motorcycle enthusiast, often struggled with finding a convenient and safe way transport his bike to nationwide events.
He knew he wasn’t the only one, so he made it his goal to provide others with a transport company they could trust.
Emery’s New Germany-based company, JE Transport, offers professional hauling of motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, automobiles, RVs, boats, and personal belongings.
“We’ll do anything and everything, pretty much,” Emery said.
Emery’s equipment includes a 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually and a 2008 J & L Cargo 48-foot trailer. Everything is in excellent shape, and Emery’s straps and wheel chocks are brand new.
Emery typically has room for eight to 14 motorcycles each trip.
“It depends on the make and model,” he explained.
“Snowbirds” who travel south for the winter can also take advantage of Emery’s services by having him haul their car to their destination.
“People are getting sick of all that driving,” Emery said. “A lot of them just want to hop on a plane and get there.”
Emery said he wants people to have a relaxing, enjoyable time when they travel.
“I’m going to try to make it easy for them,” he said, explaining that he tries to meet people wherever is most convenient for them.
As an avid motorcyclist, Emery knows the importance of delivering people’s property in a timely, efficient manner.
A Harley Davidson motorcycle can cost about $20,000, while custom bikes often range from $40,000 to $80,000.
“It’s hard to find anybody you can trust,” Emery said. “You want to make sure your bike is safe.”
Emery encourages potential clients to contact him ahead of time so that they can check out the truck and trailers themselves.
“Meet me in person,” he said. “I don’t blame them for that at all.”
Emery’s business and driving experience goes back many years. He grew up working for his family’s tree, brush, and landscaping company, Emery’s Tree Service in Delano, and had his own motorcycle at age 16.
“I always had an interest in motorcycles,” he said. At first, his mom wasn’t too thrilled, but now, she loves to ride as well.
“My mom and dad both ride now,” Emery said. “I got them into it.”
After he graduated from Watertown-Mayer High School, Emery began driving semi trucks.
“Mom and Dad helped me get into my first one,” he said. Emery mainly traveled throughout the midwest for work, but he’s had experience driving throughout the US for his own motorcycle events.
“I’ve been to quite a few of them,” he said. One of his favorites is the annual Bike Week event in Florida.
For Emery, motorcycling is all about the experience.
“Mostly, it’s the people you meet,” he said. “I enjoy going out and camping.”
Emery’s wife, Carrie, is very supportive of his hobby, and enjoys riding with him.
“She rides with me, but she won’t drive,” Emery said.
