HOWARD LAKE, MN – Don and Theresa Mages of Mages Truck and Trailer in Howard Lake are adding a new dimension to their business – an 80-foot building that will help expand their capabilities.

“We had been wanting to upgrade for forever,” Theresa said, adding that the extra push came because of the slow economy. Construction companies are looking for work, which means costs are down.

“We picked the perfect time,” Theresa said. “Interest rates are low, and when we researched the project, we had builders bending over backwards for us.”

The Mages chose RAM Buildings in Winsted, with salesman Don Schnaser.

“RAM was local, and we had done work on some of their equipment,” Theresa said, adding that they prefer to hire companies that have been customers of theirs.

“It’s a way for us to give back,” she said.

The new building will be east about one mile from the current location. Work started a few weeks ago, and Schnaser said they plan to be done later this summer.

In addition to the lowered construction costs, the Mages also wanted to expand to make room for their 19-year-old son, Alex, to join the business.

Alex recently finished his first year of diesel mechanics classes at Alexandria Technical College.

“He wants to come back home when he’s done,” Theresa said.

Don and Theresa’s other children include Kayla, 21, and Emily, 15.

Mages Truck and Trailer began in August of 1995. At the time, Don had already been an ASE certified mechanic for 13 years, working mostly for other people. He wanted to give his own business a try in order to be his own boss, and get his family more involved in the work.

Throughout the years, Theresa has been involved with the business, answering phones and handling bookwork. She’s excited for the additional space that the new building will offer.

“We ran out of room,” she said. “With the current building, we can’t fit a tractor/trailer combo inside without unhooking it. We’ll be able to do a lot more with the new building.”

Some of the services Don offers include DOT inspections, medium and heavy truck repair, gas/diesel engine repair, complete trailer service, air brakes/shocks service, suspension and driveline service, and preventative maintenance.

Mages Truck and Trailer is located on the north side of Highway 12, a few miles west of Howard Lake. For more information, call (320) 543-3122.
