DASSEL, COKATO, MN – Tickets are on sale now for Dassel-Cokato Arts Association’s second annual Celebration Showcase highlighting local talent.

The event will take place Sunday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center and will feature an array of entertainment including singers, dancers, and the musically-gifted within the community.

The DC Arts Association was established to bring affordable art and entertainment to the community, according to Executive Director Colleen Compton.

Therefore, the association depends on memberships, sponsorships, and fundraisers, like the Celebration Showcase, to keep ticket prices low, Compton explained.

The association chose a fundraiser that would recognize talent within the Dassel-Cokato community, and hopes to make it an annual event.

Last year, the showcase highlighted entertainers who had ties within the community, but were not living in the area, according to Compton.

This year, the association put a different spin on the event by inviting community members to share their talent.

“This is an opportunity to give the stage to the people in the area with such great talent,” said Jon Benson, association member and event organizer.

“There is a lot of talent [in the community],” Compton said, adding that the showcase will be good family entertainment.

Lined up thus far and ready to hit the stage on Valentine’s Day is the Dassel Leikarring.

“Leikarring,” in Norwegian, means “to have fun in a circle,” which is exactly what members of this Scandinavian folk dancing group do when they are together.

The group of 20 perform in traditional dress called a “bunad” and dance in a group to Scandinavian folk music, according to long-time member Kjell Nordlie.

Also dancing on stage is Oxygen on Tap, featuring local tap dancers Carolyn Holje, Marylou Swedberg, Sue Schwinghammer, Leann King, and Bonnie Utecht.

Sondra Huhn, owner of Dance Style Studio in Dassel, will have a group of dancers performing, as well.

Cristy Hoaglun of Dassel will perform a piano solo. Also, Dave Herring, associate pastor for Dassel Church of Christ, is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who will share his talent.

Earth Angels, a contemporary Christian music trio from the Darwin and Litchfield area, will also perform during the Celebration Showcase.

Singers Peggy Soucek (also on guitar), Marge Stewart, and Nancy Barrick have been singing together for about 11 years, oftentimes in churches and senior care homes around the community.
