MAPLE PLAIN, MN – The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), project contractor Mathiowetz Construction, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe provided an update March 17 regarding the replacement of the railroad bridge and subsequent closure of Highway 12.

It was reported that Highway 12 will officially close – and traffic be detoured – sometime the morning of Monday, April 12, according to the City of Maple Plain.

The estimated completion date for the project and reopening of the road is Oct. 18, 2010.

The contractor will start placing the barriers on side streets Thursday, April 8.

By the next day, there will be no through-traffic to or from Hennepin County Road 90 on Main Street and Drake Drive.

Access to Pioneer Cemetery off of Hennepin County Road 90 will also be closed, according to the city.

The traffic lights will be activated on Hennepin County Road 6, which is the Highway 12 detour route, Friday, April 9, as well.

Here is some other information from the city regarding the construction schedule:

• Once the temporary shoofly is constructed, the railroad will have four weeks to move the tracks from the existing bridge to the temporary one.

• The contractor has estimated three months to remove the old bridge and build the new one.

• The railroad will need another four weeks to move the tracks back.

• The final step is to rebuild Highway 12 between Hennepin County Road 90 (Independence) and Tri-K Sports (Maple Plain).

The City of Maple Plain will continue to post project updates to its web site, www.mapleplain.com, as new information is received.

More about the upcoming project

The purpose of the $7 million project is to replace the BNSF Railroad Bridge over Hwy 12 in the city of Independence, according to MnDOT.

The existing bridge does not meet minimum standard height requirements over the highway and the design of the existing bridge and the current roadway layout limits the sight distance on Highway 12.

Construction of the new bridge will provide the necessary vertical clearance and improve the sight distance through the bridge corridor.

A one-mile section of Highway 12 will be reconstructed from Hennepin County Road 90 in the Independence to the Independence/Maple Plain city limits. The new roadway will provide 12-foot lanes, 10-foot shoulders, and left and right turn lanes to existing businesses.

The detour for Hwy 12 is Hennepin County Road 90 to Hennepin County Road 6 to Hwy 12.

As part of this detour, three temporary signals will be installed at the intersections of Hennepin County Road 90/ Hennepin County Road 6, Hennepin County Road 83/Hennepin County Road 6 and Hennepin County Road 19/Hennepin County Road 6.

Access to the City of Maple Plain and Maple Plain businesses via Hennepin County Roads 83 and 19 and Highway 12 for westbound commuters, will remain open throughout construction.
