COKATO, DASSEL, MN – Users of the bike path can help fund its repair just by participating in this summer’s “Just For Fun” triathlon set for Saturday, Aug. 7.

Though the race is low-pressure and meant to be fun, Sara Keskey, Cokato resident and one of the coordinators, suggests people start training now to prepare for the event.

“If you do not know how to get started, just get up and start walking,” Keskey said.

She then suggests trainers get on the bike and in the water once a week.

The event includes a 300-yard swim, a 9-mile bike route that loops through Dassel, and a 4-mile run/walk (the same as the Turkey Trot).

To train, Keskey suggests a person walk or run Monday and Friday for 30 minutes, bike for 30 minutes Tuesday and Saturday, lap swim at the Dassel-Cokato High School pool on Wednesday, and have Thursday and Sunday off.

Keskey also suggests the free training program offered online at www.trinewbies.com, in particular, the sprint distance program.

This is the second year of the Just for Fun community triathlon.

The event began mostly out of guilt, said Keskey.

One Saturday morning during an AquaFit class, Libby Bayuk, Brittany Bayuk, and Keskey talked about how they lifeguard for people training for triathlons.

They talked about how they could probably get one going themselves and decided to give it a try.

They decided to name it “Just for Fun” since the only goal was to finish the race and have a good time doing it, Keskey explained.

There were 34 participants ranging from first-timers to the experienced.

Proceeds from last year’s event went to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk.

This year, the money raised will help fund the repair and resurfacing of the bike path between Dassel and Cokato.

Anyone can participate for $25 per person or as a team of two or three.

Event registration will be through Community Education.

Additional donations for bike path repair can be sent to Dassel-Cokato ISD #466: PO Box 1700, Cokato, MN 55321.
