LESTER PRAIRIE, MN – Motorists traveling between Lester Prairie and New Germany may need to take a different route starting next week.

Construction on the first stage of the McLeod County Road 23 reconstruction project located east of Lester Prairie between County Road 9 and the Carver County border is scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 1.

Mathiowetz Construction of Sleepy Eye, was awarded the $1.3 million project.

The first stage of the project is expected to be completed by the middle of August.

It includes widening of the road, flattening of the curve on the east end of the project, installation of new culverts, a new box culvert over Otter Creek, construction of an aggregate base, and installation of erosion control devices.

Stage two, involving paving of the bituminous surface, is scheduled to begin in late spring 2011.

There are no official detours in place, according to McLeod County Engineer John Brunkhorst. Through traffic is advised to use Trunk Highway 7 as an alternative route.

Local traffic will be permitted on the closed road and should expect minor delays and inconveniences, according to Brunkhorst.

This project is funded by federal and state aid funds.

Any questions regarding this project should be directed to Phil Schmalz, project engineer at (320) 234-0235.
