MEEKER COUNTY, MN – There are several new and fun activities added to the 138th annual Meeker County Fair, which begins Thursday, Aug. 5 at the fairgrounds in Litchfield.

Dassel Lamplighters to be a big part of the fair

The Dassel Lamplighters 4-H chapter is a big part of the Meeker County Fair, and its an event that its members have a lot of fun participating in.

“It’s the best part of being a 4-Her, being a part of the Meeker County Fair,” said Marcia Dischinger, Dassel Lamplighter leader.

This year, there are 32 kids that will be entering projects in various categories including dairy, rabbits, chickens, arts and crafts, and more, according to Dischinger.

A big part of any fair is the food, and Dischinger hopes fairgoers will stop by the brand new 4-H dining hall.

The Dassel Lamplighters will be serving Friday, Aug. 6 from 7:15 p.m. to 10 p.m., and breakfast Sunday, Aug. 8 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

This is a fundraiser for the Meeker County 4-H chapters.

“They have really good food there,” Dischinger said.

“The kids enjoy serving in that capacity as well,” she added.

The Dassel Lamplighters will also perform in Share the Fun with their skit “4-H Olympics” 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6 in the Bandshell.

Last April, the Dassel Lamplighters won grand champion at Meeker County 4-H’s Share the Fun, in which each chapter competes by performing short dramas. As part of the prize, the local chapter received the honor of performing at the Meeker County Fair, as well as the State Fair.

There will 15 local 4-Hers participating in the skit which is a spoof on the Olympics, according to Sue Cron, chair of the chapter’s Share the Fun program.

In the skit, for example, the Olympic curling event is portrayed by the girls and their large curling irons.

The kids have practiced many times for this and they are outstanding.

They work as team and all have a lot of fun, Cron said.

Other fair fun

An added feature this year at the fair will be a visit from Underwater Adventures Aquarium at the Mall of America, with a program in the Bandshell from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7.
