DASSEL, MN Paying attention to details is what Matt and Ted Doughty specialize in, and why they opened Meeker County Motors Sept. 1 in Dassel.
Meeker County Motors is an automotive and boat detailing business located next to Ron’s BP in the former Primerica building.
From carpet to paint, interior to exterior, and trunk to engine, Doughty specializes in making vehicles and boats look like new, he said.
Two years ago, Doughty and his wife, Aimee, moved to Dassel from Apple Valley in search of the small-town life they have come to find here.
With a diploma in auto body and auto detailing from Hennepin Technical College, Doughty spent 10 years working for an upscale detail shop in Brooklyn Park. He also has two years experience in auto body, but said that Meeker County Motors is not an auto repair shop.
After working long hours overnight at Bobcat in Litchfield, Doughty quickly snatched up this place as soon as he found out Curt Graff was selling the property on First Street and Highway 12.
“I bought it before it was even on the market,” Doughty said.
“I decided to go back to what I know best,” he said.
Starting his own business would also allow Doughty to spend more time with his family, he said.
For now, Doughty will focus on detailing along with boat winterizing, but eventually, he hopes to do custom welding jobs, as well.
Doughty also has a diploma in welding and metal fabrication from Minneapolis Community and Technical College.
Not only does he love auto detailing, but he also gets a great deal of satisfaction seeing the dramatic difference vehicles can have from when the come into the shop, to when they exit.
“I get satisfaction out of making somebody else’s car look new,” Doughty said.
With Meeker County Motors, Doughty hopes to serve his customers well and be around a long time.
The inspiration behind the name came from Ted and Matt’s favorite television shows Orange County Choppers and Paul Jr. Designs.
Living in Meeker County and specializing in detailing, Meeker County Motors seemed to fit for them.
Prices range from $75 to $125 for a full detail, depending on the amount of time it takes him and the size of the vehicle, Doughty explained.
Full boat detailing is $50, with winterizing at $40. He also has a combination package for $75.
During the month of September, Doughty is offering $10 off any detailing service.
Eventually, Meeker County Motors will also offer a small inventory of quality pre-owned vehicles at prices under $5,000.
Meeker County Motors is located at 100 Park Avenue West, Dassel (along Highway 12) and can be reached at (320) 275-0104.
