MAYER, MN Jered Hokenson, a 2002 graduate of Watertown-Mayer High School, has found that owning a Snap Fitness club in Mayer is the perfect way to combine two of his top interests.
“I always knew I wanted to own my own business, and I’ve been involved in athletics and fitness pretty much my whole life,” said Hokenson, who lives in Montrose.
Hokenson had an open house to introduce the club Thursday evening, and it’s grand opening was Saturday.
According to Hokenson, Snap Fitness has several advantages over other gyms.
“The biggest things are convenience and affordability,” he said.
People don’t have to sign a long-term contract, and instead can choose to pay month-to-month. Pre-paid bonus plans are also available, with the option to freeze memberships for up to three months.
Members also have the freedom to work out at any Snap Fitness location in North America, any time of day or night. With more than 2,000 clubs worldwide, chances are that Snap Fitness will always be nearby, even while traveling.
Clubs near Mayer include those in Waconia, Norwood Young America, Watertown, St. Bonifacius, Victoria, Montrose, and Delano.
Hokenson joined Snap Fitness in Watertown after graduating from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD with a degree in business.
He had been on his college’s track and basketball teams, and Snap Fitness was a way for him to stay active when sports ended.
“I got to know the franchise through that,” said Hokenson, who was working at Midwest Machinery in Howard Lake at the time.
After awhile, Hokenson decided that instead of just going to the gym, he’d like to make a career out of it. Finding a location took more than a year, but he eventually secured the perfect place: 255 Ash Avenue North, which had previously housed a coffee shop and tax service business.
“It’s about 1,700 square feet, which is somewhat smaller than most Snap Fitness clubs,” Hokenson said.
Hokenson is excited to provide the Mayer community with a clean, modern gym that’s close to home.
As far as purchasing additional locations in the future, he said it’s too early to tell.
“For now, I’m going to concentrate on this one and see where it takes me,” he said.
