DELANO, MN In light of the difficult economic times, Thurk Brothers Chevrolet in St. Bonifacius is merging with Star West Chevrolet-Honda Sports in Delano.
“It’s friends working with friends,” said Star West owner John Tackaberry. “They are closing, and they’re coming with us.”
The merger was effective April 5, and in the next few months, Thurk Brothers will be making the switch to Delano.
“We’re trying to make this a smooth transition so our customers will continue to receive the Chevrolet-care that we’ve given in the past,” said Don Thurk of Thurk Brothers.
This summer, Thurk Brothers will continue to offer Kiefer Built horse and cargo trailers at the St. Bonifacius location, Thurk said.
“The slow transition gives me more time to personally talk with people to let them know what’s going on,” Thurk said.
Thurk said he’s not sure what the long-term plan for the St. Bonifacius site will be.
“We haven’t decided that yet,” he said.
A number of the Thurk Brothers employees will be moving to Star West in Delano, including Don Thurk’s son, Tim, the general manager of Thurk Brothers.
“We would like our customers to continue with us over in Delano,” Don Thurk said.
The Thurk family has generations of experience in the automotive sales industry.
“My family has been in the car business in St. Bonifacius since 1919,” Thurk said.
Thurk’s father, Andrew, started selling Chevrolets exclusively in 1928. Andrew and his brother, Henry, became partners, and gained many loyal customers throughout the years.
Tackaberry said he hopes the merger will be a positive transition for the Thurk family.
“They’re good people, and they’re like family to us,” Tackaberry said.
Star West Chevrolet-Honda Sports is located on Highway 12 in Delano. The company began about 30 years ago, and offers Chevrolet cars, trucks, SUVs, and all Honda sports and power products.
