WINSTED, MN Recently, 14 blankets made by St. John’s of Winsted’s quilting group, “Sewing with Love” were sent to “Vision Honduras” in Stewart.
Vision Honduras is a 16-member team leaving for Honduras Thursday, March 4. They will distribute the quilts made by St. John’s quilters, as well as warm clothes, food packaged by Kids Against Hunger, and 13,000 pairs of prescription eyeglasses.
This is the sixth year that Bob Wacker of New Germany and Orville Trettin of Stewart will travel to Honduras.
In a recent phone interview with Trettin, he was appreciative of the quilts sent by Sewing with Love, which will be given to the people living in the mountains where it gets cold, Trettin said.
Trettin was 70 years old when he made his first trip to Honduras, and discovered the need for prescription eyeglasses for the people there.
He and Wacker had attended a prayer service where a little girl sitting behind Trettin asked if she could borrow his glasses so she could read her Bible.
From that incident, Trettin and Wacker observed during the rest of their stay, no one was wearing glasses something they decided was unusual for so many people.
When they returned home they began working with the Lions Club, where they were able to get help collecting prescription eyeglasses which Vision Honduras brings to the people of Honduras once a year.
The work really happens when the Vision Honduras team arrives and starts distributing the eyeglasses.
Each recipient has to be registered and everyone’s eyes have to be tested to fit each person with the correct prescription.
Each pair of eyeglasses has been marked with a prescription on each lens, and a match is made.
“We will be able to provide glasses for 85 to 90 percent of the people there,” Trettin said.
Anyone wishing to make a donation to Vision Honduras can contact Orville Trettin at (320) 562-2500 or Bob Wacker at (612) 203-1570, or make checks payable to Vision Honduras and send it to: Citizen’s Bank & Trust % of Vision Honduras, PO Box 339, Hutchinson, MN 55350.
You can help St. John’s quilters
Sewing with Love is a group of women from St. John’s Lutheran Church who love quilting. They have been making quilts together for almost 10 years.
The quilters meet in the church basement twice a month, from September until May, and make approximately 90 quilts a year.
When the quilts are finished, they are donated to different organizations chosen by the quilting members.
The quilts mean hours and hours of work, with Doris Luedke designing and sewing all of the quilt tops. Then, all of the members meet to combine the three-layered quilts with yarn, and each take a turn bringing the quilts home to bind the ends.
Sewing with Love welcomes anyone interested in making quilts to come to St. John’s Lutheran Church basement at 410 1st Street N the first and third Mondays of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
