A one-cent opportunity
March 14, 2011
Rev. Lyndon Korhonen, Good Shepherd Free Lutheran Church, Cokato

The other day, I went to pick up an item I had bought on an online auction. When I went into the office to pay, the lady said she had two totals that showed different amounts. They somehow varied by one cent.

She said I could pay whichever bill I wanted to pay. Hmm! This was odd. What would you do?

About a half-second later, I told her I wanted to pay the extra penny because I have a Savior who gave His life for me. She replied that she liked the way I think! And then she added, “Hmm!”

It is interesting that I had taken Galatians 1:3-4 as my verses for the day, “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father.”

When I read that verse in the morning, it had struck me because it was the day after Valentine’s Day. I was thinking of what a God I have, Who gave Himself for my sins.

I believe the power of God’s Word and the Holy Spirit brought the phrase to my mind when I had the opportunity to pay one of two different amounts. Little did I know there would be a quick opportunity to leave a witness for Christ by a one-cent difference.

Normally, my nature is to save every penny I can. God’s Word and His Holy Spirit are easily able to overrule my nature and help me see an opportunity to be a witness for Him.

Do you think the lady liked my way of thinking because her business made an extra penny that day? Or do you think she is pondering what God has done for her in Christ?

Hmm! I think we will find out in eternity!
