DARWIN, MN Owners of A Blue Moose Grill and Pub are excited about their first business venture and are planning on adding even more variety to their menu in the coming weeks.
Rick and Ann Zillmer purchased the former Jack’s Tavern and officially opened for business Aug. 1.
They came up with the name, A Blue Moose Grill and Pub, by using Ann’s first initial A and the color blue because Rick wears blue all the time, being a mail carrier by day and an umpire by night.
They wanted an animal in the name since people can relate to animals, so they chose a moose, Ann explained.
Ann has a love for cooking and baking she and Rick run the 4-H food stand at the Meeker County Fair and actually cooked on the weekends at Jack’s. She also used to cook for Vinny Nguyen, former owner of the Twine Ball Inn.
Now, the tables have turned and Nguyen is actually cooking for her.
A Blue Moose Grill and Pub currently serves basic bar and grill food including hamburgers, sandwiches, and appetizers, but soon it will expand its menu.
Ann is hoping by September to begin serving breakfast, as well as adding more supper items including a blue cheese burger.
“There are a lot of people who would like to be out for breakfast,” Ann said.
Her plan is to have fresh caramel rolls and donuts, along with breakfast meals like blueberry French toast, which she is hoping to find a good recipe for.
“My hobby is cookbooks. I love cookbooks,” Ann said.
She enjoys looking inside those cookbooks from relatives who have passed away and reading the notes they left behind.
“You can learn a lot about a woman once you read her cookbook,” she said.
Though the menu will expand including adding Chinese food someday the interior will stay the same, for the most part.
The couple is looking forward to adding on to the deck next year to allow for some outdoor seating, Ann said. They are also hoping to add a pool table down the road.
