DELANO, MN – A 16-inch diameter rocket will be launched in Delano Monday, July 4 as part of Delano’s Fourth of July celebration.

“We are one of the few cities in the entire state that meet the location requirements to do this,” said Alex Roeser, the Fourth of July celebration committee chairman. “It’s going to be an amazing show.”

The 16-inch rocket will be shot off during the finale of the July 4 fireworks show. Fireworks will begin at 10:30 p.m. in Central Park.

The Fourth of July celebration committee has been busy organizing events for this year’s festival.

“I’m very proud to be chairing an organization that does so many different things,” Roeser said. “All the proceeds from the event stay in this community and funnel out to many different things.”

Delano’s Fourth of July celebration will take place Friday, July 1 through Monday, July 4.

Minnesota’s oldest and largest Fourth of July parade will once again take place in Delano Monday at 10:30 a.m.

The grand marshal at this year’s parade is high school football coaching hall-of-famer Merrill Pavlovich.

The parade will take place rain or shine, and roads to the parade route will close at 9:30 a.m. The Fourth of July celebration committee is still accepting parade units.

Entertainment will be taking place under the big top in Central Park throughout the weekend.

“We’ve added more music and more acts to the entertainment tent,” Roeser said.

From 8 p.m. until midnight during each night of the festival, bands will take the stage in Central Park.

Friday night will feature local favorite Butch Automatic, followed by GB Leighton Saturday, Brat Pack Radio Sunday, and Diamond Back Monday.

Route 55 Big Band will also perform under the big top Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m., along with Soul Sisters Monday from 2 to 4 p.m.

New at Central Park this year is AWF Wrestling. Professional wrestling with Buck “Rock-N-Roll” Zumhofe will also be returning for another year.

AWF Wrestling will take place Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the north end of Central Park by Zitzloff Field.

Professional wrestling with Buck Zumhofe will take place Monday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. near the bingo stand.

“AFW will be taping the show here as their summer slam event,” Roeser said. “We are expecting a large crowd for that.”

The Delano Royalty Coronation will be Friday at 7 p.m. at the main diamond in Central Park.

GoldStar Carnival will be in Central Park Friday through Monday with rides and entertainment.

The carnival opens at 5 p.m. Friday and at noon Saturday through Monday.

Armband specials, which include unlimited rides with the purchase of a $23 armband, will take place Friday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m.

Delano’s 27th annual 5k run will begin at 9:45 a.m. Monday. In the past, about 400 to 500 runners have participated in the 5k run.

“It is a completely unique experience for runners because you run the parade route, which has thousands of people cheering for you when you’re running,” Roeser said.

Registration for the 5k run begins Monday at 7:30 a.m. or can be done online.

A variety of children’s activities will be available at Central Park during the celebration, as well.

A kiddie parade, beginning at the Delano City Hall, will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

“The kiddie parade is always fun, especially if you have kids who like to wear costumes and dress-up,” Roeser said. “The royalty does a great job with it.”

Registration for the kiddie parade will take place from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Prizes will be awarded for the best costume in patriotic, sports, cartoon, and miscellaneous categories.

A kiddie tractor pull will take place in Central Park at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Registration begins at noon.

Children 11 years and under qualify for the tractor pull, which will take place on the pavement between the baseball diamond and the bingo stand.

The second annual bean bag tournament will be going on in the entertainment tent Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m.

The cost for a team of two is $25 and includes free t-shirts. Cash prizes will be awarded if registration fills up to 64.

Registration can be done online and will be taking place until the tournament fills.

A coed softball tournament will be going on in Central Park throughout the celebration.

American Legion baseball will also take place in Central Park Saturday and Sunday at the main field.

There will be a variety of food vendors in Central Park throughout the festival. New this year is apple pie and ice cream by the Delano Chamber of Commerce.
