Marcella Craswell specializes in modified concrete for home and garden

DASSEL, MN Shoppers coming to Dassel for the occasional stores each month now have another place to check out.
MC Frog opened for its first full weekend last week and specializes in modified concrete for landscaping and countertops.
Owner Marcella Craswell of Dassel came up with the name MC FROG by using her initials and, because the store is a step in faith for her, FROG stands for “Fully Relying On God.”
It all began last November when Craswell took a class in design of modified concrete, which is made of synthetic materials making it lighter and easier to work with.
“You don’t need to hire three men to move a pot,” Craswell said.
A native of Costa Rica, Craswell, along with her husband Rick, are building a home there, where everything is built with concrete, she said.
Unfortunately, none of it is decorated.
“So, I thought I could learn and I fell in love with it,” she said.
From there, she decided to try and make a business out of it creating modified concrete landscape structures such as decorative stepping stones, pots and planters, benches, bird baths, and furniture. She is also planning to eventually make and sell fountains.
The main business for her though is the countertops, which can be stained to fit one’s kitchen and color sceme.
When it comes to cost, “Even the cheapest hardware store countertop will not compare to this,” she said.
The product is durable, environmentally friendly, and can be custom designed to fit individual needs, including color and texture.
“I just love the creativity of it and how practical and usable can be,” Craswell said.
The product can also be made very personal.
For example, she suggests a perfect gift for mothers or grandmothers could be a personalized memory bench.
Kids can come in, by appointment, to custom paint or imprint their hands on it and she will then stain and seal it.
MC FROG offers other one-of-a-kind items for sale.
Her daughters, Alaina and Adriana, both inherited their mother’s creativity.
Alaina will customize names and words designed with photographs (see picture).
The idea was from a store she was in on the north shore of Lake Superior and she first started making them for her friends as Christmas gifts. She now customizes them for $15.95.
Adriana has started with lawn decor in what she calls bowling balls also made from modified concrete, which she will then paint.
MC FROG will be open the last full weekend of the month, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. or by appointment at (320) 420-6900.
The store is located at 225 Atlantic Ave. W., Dassel.
