MEDINA, MN Just one week before Delano High School’s 2011 commencement exercises, family and friends are mourning the loss of a 2002 DHS graduate and a 2004 DHS graduate.
Lucas Matthew Jordan, 27, of Greenfield, and Jake Robert Hughes, 25, of Loretto, were killed as a result of a single-vehicle traffic accident in the 3200-block of Hamel Road in Medina just after 9:30 p.m. May 21.
Jordan was a 2002 graduate of Delano High School, and Hughes graduated from Delano High School in 2004.
A third person in the vehicle, Maria Kristina Schafer, 24, also of Loretto, was listed in critical condition as of press time. She is Hughes’ fiancée.
A 2011 Camaro being driven by Jordan was traveling on Hamel Road when it left the roadway and struck a tree, resulting in fatal injuries to Jordan, according to the Medina Police Department.
Hughes and Schafer were transported to North Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where Hughes died Wednesday morning.
“It’s a pretty big tragedy for the community,” Medina Police Chief Ed Belland said. “All three were local and well-known. It’s pretty devastating. It’s a big loss to the community, no matter what the circumstances are, to have young people killed in a car accident.”
Roads were wet at the time of the incident, and the accident remains under investigation by the Medina Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol.
Agencies assisting the Medina Police Department at the scene included the Loretto and Hamel fire departments, the state patrol, and West Hennepin Public Safety.
Funeral services for Jordan were Thursday, May 26 at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Loretto.
Funeral services for Hughes are set for Saturday, May 28 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus at 155 County Road 24 in Medina.
Visitation is set for Friday, May 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Gearty-Delmore Plymouth Chapel, located at 15800 37th Avenue North.
