Montrose ‘christens’ new industrial park with opening of Xcel Energy facility

MONTROSE, MN - Montrose city officials and representatives from Xcel Energy took the chance to tour the recently-completed service center for the company, which is the first building in the new industrial park in Montrose.

Project Engineer Lee Stokes said this project has been in the works for a long time, and said before constructing the facility in Montrose, the company had been operating out of facilities in Delano and Howard Lake for this service area.

“We wanted to consolidate,” Stokes said. “Get out of the leased property, and combine it with our gas operations in Delano. We looked at where to put it, and Montrose seemed to make logical sense.

Because of the central location to this service territory, employees who had been working out of the Howard Lake or Delano locations have been able to remain in the service area.

Stokes also said, being in Montrose is within a geographic range that is necessary for responding to emergency calls.

The new 16,000-square-foot service center in Montrose consists of both office area and shop area.

The office area houses managers, designers, administrative support staff, and other people who support operations, Stokes said. The other part of the service center is shop space, vehicle storage, and maintenance areas. There is also an exterior yard for material storage.

The project began mid-December 2010, and was constructed by Shingobee Builders. It was completed mid-summer of this year, and Xcel employees began moving to the facility in August.

“It’s the cornerstone for an industrial park that has been requested and needed for a long time,” Montrose Mayor Andy Kauffman said.

The 35-acre Montrose Business Park is located on the west side of Montrose, along Highway 12 and Clementa Avenue. The park includes industrial lots, as well as highway commercial parcels.

“It also opens up this whole industrial park for further development and it allowed us to get the utilities brought into this area, so development will be a lot simpler from this point on,” Kaufmann said.
