DELANO, MN Professional photographer Angela Kalthoff of Delano loves taking pictures of newborns, but she never anticipated that her images would be selected for a nationally published calendar.
“It was pretty random,” Kalthoff said. “Last fall, the wife of the vice president of Willow Creek Press found my newborn photos on Facebook.”
Willow Creek Press was impressed with Kalthoff’s work, and called to see if they could publish her work in a 2012 newborn calendar.
“It was very flattering,” Kalthoff said. “It was just out of the blue.”
Kalthoff said she doesn’t know anyone who’s been approached by a publisher.
“It doesn’t usually happen that way,” she said.
Willow Creek Press asked Kalthoff to submit a gallery of 40 to 50 photos she had taken in the past year. From those, the images for the calendar were chosen.
“There’s a Delano baby on the cover,” Kalthoff said.
Delano resident Kim Connor’s daughter, Sydney, was only 5 days old when the photo was taken.
Two Montrose babies are also featured, including Chelsia Checkal’s daughter, Charlotte, for June; and Brian and Jessica Platisha’s son, Cooper, for September.
“I love that they chose some local babies,” Kalthoff said.
Last year alone, Kalthoff photographed more than 70 newborns from Minnesota and the surrounding states.
“Mothers will call me before their baby is born,” she said.
Kalthoff also takes stunning maternity, children, high school, and family portraits, but newborns are her specialty.
“I like to get them under 2 weeks old,” she said. “They’re really brand new and fresh.”
Kalthoff’s interest in photography began when she was 7 years old, at her first overnight summer camp. She snapped photos of all her new friends, because she wanted to remember those happy times.
Later on, when Kalthoff was in college, her sister had her first child.
“That’s where my fascination with newborns began,” she said. “I just love capturing that stage for parents. They have that memory captured forever.”
Kalthoff began taking photos of babies and children for family and friends, while working as an elementary teacher.
Her excitement for photography intensified after her own children were born, and the hobby grew to a full-time business at her home.
Kalthoff and her husband, Michael, have three children, including Noah, who will be 7 in September, and twins Addison and Hailey, who will be 4 in August.
Soon, Kalthoff is planning to move into a new studio in Delano.
“We’re hoping to break ground in late August,” she said. “I would love to be in there for the holidays.”
The studio will provide about three times the space of her current location.
This fall, Kalthoff will also have the opportunity to co-teach a class about newborn photography at a national United Portrait Professional Association convention at the Hard Rock Café in Chicago.
Kalthoff said she feels blessed to have a job she loves. She is excited about the new calendar, which is available online at Willow Creek Press and Amazon.com.
Direct links to the sites are on the Herald Journal homepage, www.herald-journal.com. The calendar is also available locally at Kalthoff Photography.
“It’s fun to see it in print,” Kalthoff said. “It was fun for the moms, too.”

• April: Minneapolis
