Sean’s Custom Wood Working now open in Cokato
Nov. 14, 2011

COKATO, MN – Before Sean Glessing of Hutchinson was even in pre-school, his love of woodworking was evident.

He could often be found with a hammer in his hand, in the basement stacking wood, or helping his dad, Kent Glessing with carpentry jobs.

Then, in ninth grade, Glessing took his first woodworking class. He continued taking shop classes throughout his high school years, learning all he could about woodworking.

Eventually, Glessing opened his own business, Sean’s Custom Woodworking, which has recently relocated to Cokato, just behind Peterson’s Veterinary Clinic on US Highway 12.

“It’s all fun,” Glessing said of his career choice. “It’s just fun coming to work when you’re doing something you love to do.”

Glessing offers free estimates, and uses 3D design software, so customers can see what the finished project will look like before a board is even cut, he said.

Prior to opening his shop in Cokato, Glessing was located in Hutchinson, where he graduated from high school in 2010.

While in high school, Glessing began accumulating the tools of the woodworking trade, some new and some from Craigslist, he said.

Then, in mid-September 2009, he started his custom woodworking business.

“My uncle had a little building on his property that he let me use,” Glessing said.

Recently, the business outgrew his uncle’s building, and Glessing had to look for a new home for his shop.

When he first began looking for a new building, he ran into quite a few deadends.

“Nobody wanted me renting from them because of the fire hazard, and the upgrades that would have to be done for dust and the electrical system,” Glessing said.

Finally, he found the perfect space at his current location in Cokato, and the only upgrade needed was a 220-volt outlet for the dust collector, Glessing said.

One of Glessing’s favorite projects so far was remodeling a dentist’s office. Glessing had to construct a tambour, or roll-top door, because the space it filled was too wide for pre-made tambour doors or panels, he said.

Glessing claims he can make anything with wood, promising to push only the highest quality products out of his door. “If you can dream it, I can build it,” he said.

In the two years he has really focusing on building his business, Glessing has been able to remain busy and build a good clientele, he said.

A factor that has helped him be successful is receiving business from Tim Burley of Burley Fireplaces and Spas in Hutchinson. Glessing builds mantles for many of the fireplaces Burley sells.

Whenever he gets a more ahead financially, he reinvests in his business to help it run even more efficiently, Glessing said.

For instance, the 3D design software gives the specifications and cut work for all the pieces in the design, saving Glessing time in the drawing and bidding process.

Glessing likes the woodworking business because there is always something new.

“That’s what’s so neat about this business, every job that comes through the door is different – never doing the same thing twice,” Glessing said.
