DASSEL, COKATO, MN The high-energy a capella group Tonic Sol-fa is returning to the Dassel-Cokato Performing Arts Center for the third time.
This year, Tonic Sol-fa will perform its holiday show Friday, Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving.
“They actually called me and asked if they could perform here,” said DC Arts Association Executive Director Colleen Compton. “They’ve always liked this venue.”
In years past, the group performed its holiday show in Willmar, where tickets were general admission.
Dorene Erickson of Cokato has actually been to four of their holiday shows and didn’t enjoy waiting in the cold to get good seats, which were first-come, first-serve.
“It wasn’t a good system,” she said.
With the holiday show at the PAC, Erickson was the first to get tickets when they went on sale for association members.
The a cappella group began with Mark McGowan (baritone) and Shaun Johnson (lead vocalist) while they were attending St. John’s University in the mid-1990s. Greg Bannwarth (tenor) and Jared Dove (bass) soon joined and together they made an appearance on the national level with NBC’s “Today Show” and were featured in Newsweek magazine.
The group recently released their eighth album, entitled “Something Beautiful.”
“They were really popular when they’ve been here before,” Compton said.
Tonic Sol-fa was here in February 2006, and again in February 2009. Approximately 450 tickets were sold for each show, according to Compton.
Erickson is looking forward to the holiday show at the PAC.
“They do such a nice job with their Christmas carols,” she said, adding that the a cappella is not only moving, but can be funny, too.
This is the first DC Arts Association performance to offer online ticket sales using a credit card, which Compton is excited about. Visit www.dc.k12.mn.us/pac.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for youth, and can still be purchased by calling Community Education at (320) 286-4120 or in the office.
