WAVERLY, MN It only comes once a year, but it’s well worth the wait.
Waverly Daze 2011 will take place Friday through Sunday, July 8-10.
“There will be live music all weekend,” organizer Tim LePage said.
Friday night will feature the Deep Fried Tweeters, from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The band of six diverse musicians plays a variety of music, such as rock and roll, country, and country rock.
From 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Saturday night’s entertainment is Blurred Vision, a high-energy band that plays classic rock, party, dance, and country tunes.
Sunday afternoon, the Wagon Wheelers will perform country, gospel, and rockabilly music at the ball park.
In addition to music, several other festivities are scheduled throughout the weekend, including a tractor show at Railroad Park, with setup at noon Friday.
Friday evening entertainment starts with girls’ and boys’ ball games and a KRWC road show. A free fireworks show by the lake will be at 10:15 p.m., with adult softball games before and after.
The weekend excitement continues Saturday morning, with fishing contest registration from 7 to 8 a.m. The contest ends with a fish weigh-in at noon.
At 9 a.m., runners will enjoy the free 5k run around Waverly Lake. Children can also get some exercise, with a one-mile run at the same time.
Other fitness opportunities include the volleyball tournament, which begins at 9 a.m., and the softball tournament at 9:30 a.m
Community members also won’t want to miss the beanbag toss tournament, which starts at 10 a.m. at the tennis courts.
In 2009 and 2010, 64 teams participated, which was double the number from 2008.
“That’s been a really big event,” LePage said. “They’re going to try to get 100 teams.”
“We always raffle off a board,” said Kent Houston of the Montrose-Waverly Chamber of Commerce. “This year, we’re also having a beanbag toss challenge.”
The annual kiddie parade will be at the Waverly city office at 11:30 a.m., followed by a horseshoe tournament at the ball park horseshoe pits at noon.
A garden tractor pull will take place at Railroad Park at 1 p.m.
Boat owners will have decorated boats on display at 3 p.m.
Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church will be at 5 p.m. Saturday evening, and 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
Sunday enjoyment will also include a pancake breakfast at the Knights of Columbus Hall, from 7 to 11 a.m.
More volleyball games will take place at 9 a.m., and a parade and tractor parade will be at 1 p.m.
Softball tournaments will be going on after the parade, and a Knights of Columbus pork chop dinner at Legion Park will be available until 7 p.m.
The weekend finale is Waverly royalty coronation at 3:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Fellowship Hall. Admission is $5 per person.
