WINSTED, MN Jason Eberhard of Winsted died in a single-vehicle accident the morning of July 9 on his way to work at Randy’s Environmental Services in Delano.
The accident was reported at 6:18 a.m. Eberhard, 37, was declared dead at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.
Eberhard leaves behind his wife, Becky, and their five children, Liam, 8, Ivan, 5, Hugo, 3, Holly, 3, and Orin 2.
Besides working at Randy’s, Eberhard also worked a second job at the Sinclair Station in Howard Lake a few nights a week to help make ends meet.
His family and friends describe Eberhard as a “wonderful father, a dedicated husband, and a US Army Reserve veteran.
Dave Arbuckle has been a friend of Eberhard since they met in 2001, when they both worked at Schmit Towing in Golden Valley.
The two became good friends and Dave introduced Jason to his cousin, Becky. The couple married in 2005.
“It’s hard right now.” Arbuckle said “We are all in a state of shock.”
Although there has been no official word on the cause of the accident, Arbuckle thinks Eberhard just fell asleep behind the wheel because he had been working a couple of jobs to support the family.
Arbuckle’s wife, Cathy, has known Jason for eight years and she said what impressed her most about Jason was his ability to always make time for his children.
Even though he worked two jobs, he would come home in between his shifts so he could see the children before they went to sleep at night, Cathy said.
“I can’t say enough good things about what a great father he was to the children. He was patient and had a calm spirit,” Cathy said. “It’s tragic that the younger children won’t get to know what a wonderful father he was.”
The accident happened on Wright County Road 30 SW in Woodland Township.
Eberhard’s 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling eastbound on Wright County Road 30 when it entered the south ditch, hit a driveway approach and went airborne, prior to striking a power pole, according to the Wright County Sheriff’s Office. It continued to roll, ending up on its roof.
A fund has been established for the Eberhard family. Donations can be made to: Jason Eberhard Family Fund, State Bank of Delano, 1300 Babcock Blvd. PO Box 530; Delano, MN 55328.
Visitation was at Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted Thursday. A memorial service also took place at the chapel. Pastor Mark Loder of St. John’s Lutheran Church officiated.
