DELANO, MN In the past, when Delano Dental patients asked for “Dr. Madden,” they meant either Tom Madden or his brother, Mark.
Now, the title also refers to Tom’s son, Dan Madden, who recently joined the practice on a part-time basis.
“This is a nice addition for our patients,” Mark commented. “Typically, we refer some procedures to the cities, but now we’ll be able to help our patients stay in town.”
At Delano Dental, Dan will be focusing on oral surgery, implant dentistry, and CAD/CAM Cerec (one-visit crown) dentistry.
In addition to serving in his hometown a few days each month, Dan has a full-time job at a private dental practice in Oregon.
“I’m glad to be part of dentistry in this age,” Dan said. “The advances that have been made in the last 10 years are incredible.”
Growing up in the dental profession, Dan witnessed many improvements throughout the years.
His father, Tom, founded Delano Dental in 1977.
Tom was originally from Minneapolis, but moved to the area a few years after graduating from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
He and his wife, Sharon, from Buffalo, were just starting their family at the time.
“It’s such a privilege to be a dentist,” Tom said. “It looked like a great profession, and it is.”
Tom’s younger brother, Mark, agrees.
“Our work can be life-changing for people,” he said. “It’s also a very artistic profession.”
Initially, Mark had earned a degree in tool design, because he enjoys technology and working with his hands. It didn’t take long, however, before he became interested in dentistry, as well.
He graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1988, and joined Tom’s practice.
Like his uncle, Dan hadn’t always planned on being a dentist.
“I was interested in health care, but I wanted to have my own path,” said Dan, a 1999 graduate of Delano High School.
However, of Tom’s six sons, two became dentists.
“All the kids had the opportunity to work in the office in high school,” Tom said. “They all made their own decisions what they wanted to do.”
Dan went to the same dental school as his dad and uncle, but put a fresh spin on his career with an international approach, practicing with the world’s leading surgeons and restorative dentists.
He is also an affiliate assistant professor at the Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry. He currently provides surgical and restorative dentistry at Hood River Dental in Oregon, and helps at the underserved La Clinica Del Carinio community health center.
A caring clinic
“I really enjoy helping people by improving their basic function,” Dan said.
“There’s nothing more incredible than helping someone with an emergency,” Mark added. “When you’re able to help someone who’s in pain, you just feel so good about it.”
Delano Dental strives to provide emergency patients with same-day care, to minimize the time they are suffering.
The clinic is also a strong supporter of school and community events, and makes donating to local charities a priority.
Mark is a member of the Delano Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Delano Lions Club. His two sons both attend Delano Public Schools.
A few of Tom’s favorite activities include hunting, fishing, and spending time with his four grandchildren.
Dan also enjoys being active, and loves adventures sports and nature photography.
At Delano Dental, Dan is looking forward to reconnecting with his hometown community, and seeing his family more often.
