DELANO, MN FOX 9 meteorologist Keith Marler has been announced as this year’s grand marshal for Delano’s Fourth of July parade.
“Every year, the Lions organization tries to find a grand marshal that appeals to all age groups and is someone that people either find interesting and/or entertaining,” said Curt Nelson of the Delano Lions, which coordinates the parade as part of the Fourth of July Celebration Committee. “Keith is very popular. People like his style and how he goes about performing his job. To many people, he is seen as a public servant providing valuable weather information.”
Marler earned his bachelor’s degree in physics and math at the University of Maryland and went on to graduate school for meteorology.
While working on a master’s degree, Marler got his first taste of the early morning routine as an intern with the morning meteorologist at WUSA-TV9 in Washington, DC.
Following his internship, Marler landed his first television job as morning meteorologist at KBJR-News6 in Duluth.
Marler and his wife Susan, whom he met at the University of Maryland, packed and moved to the Northland.
After three years of lake-effect snow, minus 50 degree wind chills, and bears in the backyard, Marler moved on to WUSA-TV9 in the nation’s capitol. There he was the weekend and noon meteorologist at the CBS affiliate.
After a few years in DC, the Marlers moved halfway across the country again (this time to the Twin Cities) and they have no desire to leave anytime soon.
Marler can be seen doing “Weather on the 9s” from 4:30 to 9 a.m. weekdays on the FOX 9 Morning News. Marler is also the co-host of the Emmy Award winning FOX 9 Buzz weekdays from 9 to 10 a.m.
“We are lucky to have Keith and appreciate Fox 9 for allowing Keith to miss part of his show on July 4th to attend our parade,” Nelson said.
Marler received the American Meteorological Society’s Seal of Approval in 2000.
Keith and Susan have added to their family here in Minnesota with the birth of their daughter in 2004 and their son in 2007.
Marler enjoys spending time with his family and friends, a good movie, and “geeking” out on comic books. He lives in Maple Grove with Susan, daughter Gracie, and son Jack.
“We noticed his popularity last year at the Fox 9 booth at the Minnesota State Fair,” Nelson added.
The Delano Fourth of July Celebration parade will take place Wednesday, July 4 at 10:30 a.m.
The celebration will be split this year due to the Fourth of July falling on a Wednesday. The celebration will take place Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1, break on Monday, July 2, and then resume Tuesday, July 3, and Wednesday, July 4.
Bands booked for this year’s celebration include Rocket Club, GB Leighton/Tim Mahoney, and DiamondBack. As always, there is never a cover charge for the live music.
Along with the top-notch musical entertainment, organizers are proud to be bringing back the ever-popular baseball and softball tournaments, the GoldStar Carnival, fireworks, and plenty of food and beverage options for the entire celebration.
The 28th annual 5k race will also be taking place in 2012, with sponsorships and runners presently being sought. In 2009, the course was certified, which attracted more runners and brought the event to a higher level.
Representatives of six local organizations make up the Fourth of July Celebration Committee the Delano Athletic Club, Delano Lions, Delano Sportsmen’s Club, Delano Jaycees, Delano Area Chamber of Commerce, and Delano American Legion.
